WLE Afternoon Session Day 2

Limitations to KMC Contributing to Impact Pathways

  • Resources
  • Skills needed—behavioral change and comms might need to be brought in
  • Getting by-in from research managers
  • How does data management fit in?
  • How do all the pieces fit together?

o One potential solution: cascade training Communication channels that allow for adaptive management, iterative processes Involving every department/partner in the development of OLMs is necessary Not all communications people may be interested in participating in formulating OLMs At AAS, biggest challenge has been convincing our other donors. Invested in ToCs and impact pathways but 80% of funding is bilateral. Outputs: How do you map publications to WLE – CGSPACE? KM seems to keep slipping out of discussion—how do we involve it?

How do we get involved?

  • Should be possible—projects are mapped to themes and pathways so they should be able to get to this stage
  • Important to give specific examples of how KM and comms can be involved throughout the project timeline, not just at the end

o Action point: create a doc where people can contribute to creating a one or two-page document. Can be modeled around a research lifecycle. Keep KMCs involved in CRPs in contact * o Can we create a specific platform for airing problems and getting feedback? ' § Could we use the wiki for this? '* Will discuss more tomorrow '* Thor, Michael and Elizabeth as focal points for questions regarding impact pathways/OLM involvement '* Could create an ‘impact pathway pipeline’ so we now what has been created and what has had comms/KM input '''' o Could get Elizabeth onboard with this easily

Next Steps

  • December 9-12 meeting in Amman with science focal points

o What impact pathways? Who is involved? o Identifying key development challenges in focal regions * § Participatory scoping and then refinement

  • o Michael will present on knowledge sharing tools, branding and blog but we could use this space to present to science focal points and MT
  • Outcome mapping workshop some time in February

o Unclear if it’s global flagships and focal regions or… o Could potentially lobby to get core group of comms people to this meeting, with WLE funding

WLE 2013 Communications Opportunity Fund Presentations

  • Ontology of WLE knowledge domain

o Is-a relationships: _ is a main, ___ is a sub-term of __ o Ontology parts * § Suggest to break ontology down into four components of knowledge products: drivers of change, systems and technologies; policy and management options; people and locations

  • o Pulled key words out of existing resources (corporate materials, proposals, strategies, papers)
  • o Platforms: Vivo and CG Space
  • o Challenge: need to find own money to cover staff time
  • o Could have structured proposal differently if had known Paul Stapleton was focal point
  • o Discussion

§ We have standard set of key words for CG Space. Is there a way to cross-check with this ontology? * Yes, could use micro-thesaurus * § Who else is working on this? How do you hope to agree on terms with scientists? ' Was supposed to have a meeting with scientists to confirm terms. ' § Managing funds has been a problem for many. It’s a good grant for a trip or a conference, but cannot pay for staff time.

Tomorrow

  • We will create short document of examples of KMC involvement in project lifecycles
  • Review 2013 activities
  • Plan for 2014 activities
