Organizing, Managing, Communicating and Leveraging Information and Knowledge to Support and Deliver CRP Results: A hands-on Workshop on Approaches, Tools, Systems and Services

Addis Ababa, 17-20 October 2012 Co-organized by IWMI/Water, Land & Ecosystems and ILRI/Livestock & Fish Back to the agenda page

Plenary session: Knowledge sharing and learning

File:Plenary KSL.pptx File:AAS - KSL.pptx

Purpose

  • To clarify what approaches are under a broad 'knowledge sharing and learning' banner and why this matters;
  • To get a sense of what we need around that area for our CRPs;
  • To map/identify ongoing activities and recognized gaps;

#x-Session designSession design

  • (30 min) presentations Marina and Ewen about the overall topic
  • (20 min) Speed marketplace on what we do and should do around:

M&E of KM & comms Training and capacity development Participatory social media Writeshops and other participatory writing approaches Social learning and open innovation What gaps remain...

  • (10 min) Reflections to prioritize interventions

#x-OutputsOutputs / outcomes

  • Everyone on the same page regarding the stakes of knowledge sharing / learning;
  • Listing of experiences from each CRP/centre etc. around these areas;
  • Rough prioritization of building blocks under this area and of gaps to address in a way or another (leading to another building block?)

Knowledge sharing and learning and why it matters

Why does it matter?

  • To be more effective both as individuals and collectively as an organization
  • To curate information and turn it into useful knowledge especially when engaging with people
  • To learn individually especially in recognized complexities and the amounts of organizational issues and complexities we come across
  • Support collaborative decision making
  • Ensure integration across Information Management, Monitoring & Evaluation and Communications
  • Sum of integrating practices which, over time, produce a culture of learning
  • To create purposeful agendas within and out of our areas of working
  • To become more effective /work systematically
  • To prove/justify the value of our work
  • To improve the value of what we are doing/monitor and evaluate on what we are doing in terms of programs

Knowledge sharing and learning is about:

1) Managing information

2) Sharing knowledge

3) Social learning

4) Adaptive management of information and knowledge

5) Cultivating knowledge

6) Adaptive management of KM: it’s important to periodically review overall KM programs and report findings. Evaluate the effectiveness of your Knowledge for impact, develop Knowledge management strategies and actions and adjust management actions and arrangements to enhance effectiveness.

7) Individual learning for instance on how to: set information filters especially in an information overload environment, and how to use information to cultivate knowledge.

The ‘how’ of knowledge management:

Effective KM can be done through:

  • Monitoring and evaluation of KM and communication work: this can be done though surveys, media reports/reviews/ statistics/debates/agendas generated form our communication work.
  • Though capacity development and training
  • Social learning and open innovations
  • Participatory communication which can involve the use of social media tools and writeshops.

For CRP’s

  • We need good capacities to role model good behaviors in knowledge management. We need to build our own capacities in KM in order to build other peoples capacities in KM.
  • Good principles and good practices to motivate others to do the same
  • Good tools and approaches to encourage sharing and learn(both individually and collectively)
  • Recognition of uncertainty and long causal chains in outcome pathways
  • Work towards change in KAS
  • Focus on how we learn – research process outcomes
  • Be cognizant of the wider development process we are engaging with
  • Good integration in:

knowledge sharing in research Embedding learning in monitoring Adaptive management(individual and collectively
